“El Corrido de Sylvia Rivera,” is Renee Goust’s ode to the legendary LGBTQIA+ rights activist at Stonewall Inn. This queer corrido with a blues twist brings gay, lesbian and trans narratives into traditionally conservative Mexican and American folk music genres. “Sylvia Rivera was an activist and a heroine for trans people’s rights. To praise her struggle and fight for our communities in the form of a corrido seems transgressive to me because of the patriarchal messages that these music genres usually promote”.
