OKUTÉ “Caridad”

In the Yoruba religion Okuté is the creator of the cold waters that brought shackled Africans to the port of Havana. Here Rumba was born in solares, played on wooden cajons ferried across the waters, its rhythms still resounding centuries later on bata drums at religious bembe and impromptu descargas. The formidable ensemble Okuté alchemizes the traditional voice and percussion language of Rumba, layering tres and upright bass to create a sound all their own. Produced by Orquesta Akokan’s Jacob Plasse with additional arrangements by Michael Eckroth, Okuté delivers anexplosive grittiness rarely captured on wax, a soulfulness flowing from rumberos of the highest musical sophistication.
