Jackie Cruz, the Dominican–American actress, singer and activist known for her role as Marisol “Flaca” Gonzales on the Netflix original series Orange Is the New Black, releases today a new single called “Melly 16”, an impactful down tempo poem produced by Shawn wasabi, brvo and Feefa that showcases the artists mystique and depth while it narrates one of the most emotional events in her life.
At 16 years old, JACKIE found herself surrounded by the wrong crowd, living by herself and surviving a lifestyle no teenage girl should endure; until it all came crashing down in a car accident. Not wearing a seatbelt, the singer flew out the window and ended up in a coma for 72 hours. While in rehab, JACKIE met a 10 year old girl named Melly, she was completely paralyzed. The profound sadness she felt for the little one and the feeling that she had just gotten a second chance, gave the artist a new perspective and gave her life a new goal, to inspire and show others that you can go through anything and still make it out with flying colors.
This new song will be part of her upcoming studio release titled Hija de Chavez (Jackie’s legal last name), and as this song demonstrates, the talented artist promises a very personal album that will cater to her feelings and who she is. Music is therapy for Jackie, and unlike acting, a way to show her true self.
