Chris Trinidad y Con Todo

Recipe for “Con Todo”: Take one Filipino-Canadian bass player, add songs he wrote on cruise ships in the Caribbean, and marinate for 19 years. Combine with one Mexican-American Grammy-winning arranger of salsa music. Then enjoy this Latin jazz album of cross-pollinated melodies, rhythms, and genres from two North American musicians with a passion for the flavours of Afro-Cuban music. Chris Trinidad and Christian Tumalan collaborate and celebrate on this cross-border project. They’re joined by celebrated musicians like longtime Santana horn section members Bill Ortiz and Jeff Cressman. Together, they explore what music sounds like when walls are broken and borders are opened.

The album opens with New Moon in My Mind, with Cuban timba bases, featuring Jeff Cressman and Bill Ortiz in trombone and trumpet solos, respectively. Open Eyes flirts with the brass band with great display of Tod Dickow (flute), Anthony Blea (violin) and Jamie Dubberly (trombone) and the forceful presence of the vocal duo made up of Juan Luis Perez and Christelle Durandy while the Cuban Carlos Caro performs the only from tumbadoras. The mystical White Tigers and Gray Elephants, an Afro-Cuban bembe, brings us closer to the great executions of Tony Peebles on the tenor saxophone and Christian Tumalan on keyboards, as well as a great Trinidad on bass. The Bolero Reaching A Reason transports us to an internal universe in the depths of our minds with a great presence of Trinidad in the bass solo. The Essence Of Intent, a lilting cha cha cha, inspiring the music of Canadian Brad Turner, features solos by Tumalan on keyboard and Colin Douglas on timpani. Principios De La Chanceidad is an effervescent Latin-Jazz with a 6/8 introduction with an enveloping tension and an even better crescendo. Until Then Mi Amigo with songo as the main base -a clear allusion to the music of Los Van Van- highlights Tumalan on the piano. Espíritu Del Antiguo Sol, inspired by the music of Richard Bona, is a joyous Puerto Rican full with certain elements of the son.

The album is a celebration of music blends of jazz and complex Latin rhythms, illustrating exactly why music lovers and DJs need to buy this record!
